What is the difference between a 12 mil and 20 mil SPC wear layer?
A 12 mil wear layer is approximately 0.305 mm and is commonly used for mainstream
residential flooring. A 20 mil wear layer is approximately 0.508 mm and provides more
transparent protective material for busy homes, rentals, hospitality and many
light-commercial programs. The right option depends on traffic, maintenance, warranty
and the expected replacement cycle.
Is a 0.5mm wear layer exactly the same as 20 mil?
They are commonly treated as the same product class, but they are not mathematically
identical. A 0.5 mm layer equals about 19.69 mil, while 20 mil equals 0.508 mm. The
quotation and purchase order should state the supplier's actual measurement unit and
manufacturing tolerance.
Is a 0.3mm wear layer enough for SPC flooring?
A 0.3 mm wear layer is often appropriate for residential rooms and value-focused
flooring programs when the traffic, maintenance and performance claim are realistic.
Busy entrances, chair-caster areas, rental turnover, retail paths and longer commercial
service expectations generally justify a stronger surface specification.
Does a thicker wear layer make SPC flooring scratch proof?
No. A thicker wear layer supports long-term abrasion protection, but sharp metal,
construction debris, dragged furniture and grit can mark any resilient floor. The UV
finish, surface texture, cleaning method, entry matting, furniture pads and suitable
chair casters also influence how the floor looks over time.
Should retail SPC flooring use 12 mil or 20 mil?
Twenty mil is normally the safer starting point for retail customer paths and other
repeatedly used areas. Final selection should consider entrance grit, daily footfall,
moving displays, cleaning equipment, warranty positioning and expected replacement
cycle. Higher-traffic entrances may require additional specification review.
How should an importer check the wear layer before production?
Request a written layer breakdown, inspect representative cross sections, approve a
coded sample and keep the wear layer, unit, tolerance, surface finish, décor, core,
backing and packaging synchronized in the quotation and PO. Batch records and
pre-shipment verification can then be connected to the approved specification.
